From Backpack to Business: How HostelMatch is Redefining Hostel Travel

Founder: Abhijit Kejriwal
Company: HostelMatch
Sector: Travel
Location: Canada

The Journey to HostelMatch

Originally from India and now based in Toronto, Abhijit started out with a marketing degree from UBC and stints in ecommerce at Walmart. His transition into tech as a product manager for a fast-growing global company opened doors—and new travel possibilities.

With frequent business trips to Belgium, Abhijit became a seasoned hostel-goer, extending his stays to explore Europe’s hidden gems. But as much as he enjoyed the social and budget-friendly side of hostels, he couldn’t ignore the frustration of choosing the right one. Hostel search results often prioritized generic options, leaving him with disappointing stays in places that didn’t match his expectations.

The founder insight: As he puts it, “Hostels are about more than a bed; they’re about experiences.” Abhijit quickly recognized a market gap that existing players weren’t addressing: budget travelers wanted an experience that matched their personality and expectations, not just a low-cost place to crash. This insight became the foundation for HostelMatch.
